Miaka is just a normal middle school student with normal problems. Her mom nags her about her grades, entrance exams are around the corner, and she just can't get a boyfriend. She gets a whole new set of responsibilities, though, when she's transported into a book called The Universe of the Four Gods with her best friend Yui. They appear in a fictional version of ancient China in a country called Hong-Nan. Miaka and Yui are saved by the dashing Tamahome from a group of bandits, and then instantly appear back home. After a fight with her mother Miaka returns alone to the world of the book where the Emperor asks her to accept the role of Preistess of Suzaku. Now, on top of studying for her ominous exams, Miaka needs to find seven Celestial Warriors so the god Suzaku will grant her wishes, which range from picking her school to preventing an invasion in Hong-Nan. After months of adventures, and starting a relationship with Tamahome, Miaka returns to the real world with the help of Yui, but after only a short time home Miaka discovers that Yui has become trapped in the book. Miaka once again enters The Universe of the Four Gods, but now the bitter Yui has become the Preistess of Seiryu in the neighboring country of Qu-Dong. Yui vows to steal Tamahome away from Miaka and aid Qu-Dong in the soon to come war with Hong-Nan. Miaka needs to find her remaining Warriors, rescue Yui, and get out of the book in time to take her entrance exams and she needs to do it before their respective countries wage war with her and her friend trapped in the crossfire.

"You know what this mark on my forehead means? The other kids used to tease me all the time over it. But, now I finally understand. It means I was born to protect you. I live for you!"
