One Piece
"Protecting what we cherish most as men is the reason why we formed this pirate crew!"
One Piece began as a manga by Eiichiro Oda, a former assistant to the famous Nobuhiro Watsuki of Ruroni Kenshin. In began in the Japanese Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997 where it quickly won popularity. Because of the strong story, colorful characters, intense fights, and clever plot twists One Piece is currently the most popular manga in Japan. In February 2005 it set a record as the fastest manga publication to reach 100,000,000 copies sold.
One Piece is set in a fictional world where the Age of Piracy has been ushered in by the execution of Gold Roger, the King of Pirates. With his last breath he declared that he left all his treasure for the taking in One Piece. Our story follows Monkey D. Luffy who dreams of becoming the next Pirate King. Although Luffy and his crew are considered outlaws they are much truer to their ideals than other pirates, or the corrupt Navy. Luffy was granted great power after he ate a form of Devil Fruit called the Gum Gum Fruit. As a result his body turned to rubber and he became able to stretch a great distance, but the fruit also cursed Luffy to become deadweight underwater, preventing him from ever being able to swim. Luffy and his crew have to face many enemies with strange powers acquired by Devil Fruit, but they will stop at nothing to achieve their dreams and defeat those who would crush them.
