Final Fantasy VII
"These days, all it takes for your dreams to come true is money and power."
Final Fantasy VII is known as, "the game that sold the PlayStation," because it recieved rave reviews critically and comercially from... everyone. In two years it sold eight million copies, but why the huge popularity? Final Fantasy VII was the first of the series to be released on Playstaion, and also the first to use 3D computer graphics.
The world of Final Fantasy VII is controlled economically, militarily, and politically by a company called the Shinra Electric Power Company. Shinra profits from it's Mako reactors, which pump Mako energy directly from the planet and convert it into electricity. Mako is drawn from the Lifestream which is a flow of souls beneath the crust of the planet. All life starts in the Lifestream and returns to it upon death. Overall, extracting Mako energy drains life directly from the planet. A resistance group called AVALANCHE is well aware of this and wants to destroy the eight Mako reactors surrounding the city of Midgar. AVALANCHE hires a mercenary named Cloud who was a former member of SOLDIER, Shinra's elite special forces team. Cloud shows little interest in cause at first, but it becomes inevitably clear that Shinra's ecologically destructive actions are connected to shady figure named Sephiroth from Cloud's past. As Cloud gets drawn deeper and deeper into the conflict between Shinra, AVALANCHE, and Sephiroth his past and identity come into question and he finds out more about himself than he ever wanted to know.
